Boys and girls,
Looks like we'll have a wet day tomorrow but not as wet as Sunday. Hm... is that supposed to make you feel better? Well, yeah, it is! :) Let's do Mission Peak tomorrow morning before the rains come! We will NOT meet at Bijan for carpool as Mission Peak is close enough for everyone. Please meet up at the Stanford Av parking lot of Mission Peak to start hiking at 8AM. It is a strenuous hike and should generate lots of heat as we go up, which may be quite welcomed since it'll be fairly cold, not to mention possibly wet. So bring your ponchos, raincoats, umbrellas, and wear hiking shoes if you have time. The distance is around 5.5 miles, not very far, relatively speaking, but because of the 2000 ft climb, you WILL burn a lot of calories. So after the hike, which should finish at around 11:30 or 12 pm at the latest - we'll go grab some hot food from the many restaurants nearby.

We will NOT meet at Bijan for the hike. Please meet the hiking group at the Stanford Ave parking lot at 7:45 AM. The hike will start at 8:00 AM exactly!

Schedule for this hike:

7:45 AM. Meet at Mission Peak's Stanford Ave parking lot.
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM. Start hiking up to the peak.
10:00 AM - 10:30 AM. Rest on peak.
10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Hike down from the peak.
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. Seek out meal in a nearby restaurant!

Trail Information

Location: About 3 miles east of Rt 880, in Fremont.
Distance: 5.5 miles (all up in the first half, all down in the second half)
Elevation change: +/- 2000 ft, starting elevation is about 300 ft.
Time: ~2.5 to 3 hrs, depending on breaks taken.
Difficulty: Strenuous
Trail conditions: All open-space. Trails range from single man-width to car-width, but mostly car-width.
What to see: The terrain is open fields (cow pasture) until the top 25%, which then become more rocky.

Map/directions

Mission Peak (Stanford Ave parking) - for HIKING: 6:15 pm

1. Take 880 North or South to Mission Blvd exit.
2. Go onto Mission Blvd and pass 680. After passing 680, in 1/4 mile, turn right onto Stanford Ave.
3. Stay on Stanford Ave to the very end of the road (about 1/2 mi) and the parking lot is right there. There's enough space for maybe 20 cars. If full, park on residential roadside a few hundred feet before the parking lot.

Notes about this hike

Hike CANCELLED only if continuous rain expected for time of hike (right now it appears to be showers, not rain expected for Saturday morning).
Bring raincoats, ponchos, or umbrellas; the hike WILL be at least somewhat wet from passing showers.
Bring medium-thickness jacket - not just windbreakers! Head protection from possible wind would be good. Wear at least sweatshirt or fleece. Wear thermals to keep warm.
Wear sweatpants or jeans, NO shorts unless you want to freeze your legs :)
Bring 2-3 bottles of water.

Suntan lotion (I'll have a bottle)
Snacks - dried fruits, granola bars, etc.

Sweatshirt/jacket (in case), sweatpants or shorts
Hat (for sunny hikes)
Money (for food if wanted)
