Sunrise in San Francisco

Map showing the trails that we took - total of about 7 miles with 500 ft elevation change.

The loop we took was 6.4 miles, but we also took a side trip of about 0.5 miles to marvel at woodpecker-sculpted ponderosas.
0211121
The day started with plenty of blue sky, as seen here as the backdrop of a oak tree.

'Red-stemmed Filaree' (Erodium cicutarium)
0210957
A variety of trees occupy Henry Coe state park
0210958
300 ft above the visitor center, Monument trail splits into Hobbs Road and a side-trail to ponderosa pines.
0210959
The straight bare trunk on the left is tatooed with thousands of holes that held acorns hoarded by woodpeckers.

0210962
Countless holes crowd the bark of a pine tree - see also the 3 following pics.

0210965
It almost looks like the holes were machine-drilled. But alas, they were made by woodpeckers!
0210966
The acorns were not easy to retrieve from the holes. Perhaps the moist winter have expanded the nuts somewhat.
0210967
A fallen tree becomes home to thousands of acorns - like a food bank for the woodpeckers.
0210968
A view of the Morgan Hill vallye (looking west, north-west)
0210970
City of Morgan Hill sleeps below.
0210971
A magnificent oak tree.
0210972
A huge oak tree perhaps 50 feet tall and 80 feet wide!
0210973
On the surface of this deceased pine are spirals of acorn holes dug by woodpeckers to store their food.
0210975
'Redwood Violet' (Viola sempervirens)
0210976
'Redwood Violet' (Viola sempervirens) - I'm a little surprised to find them in the open field.
0210977
'Redwood Violets' and pine cones.
0210978
'California Buttercup' (Ranunculus californicus)
0210979
Western Hound's Tongue (Cynoglossum grande). Looks like a forget-me-not but is much bigger (1/2 in to 1 in across)
0210980
A large cage was lined with dried corn.
