January 31, 2004 - Henry Coe State Park This hike, organized by Brenda, was attended by 18 people on a cool sunny day. It was quite a strenuous hike which worked the muscles quite well :) The total distance was 11.1 miles, with elevation changes of -2,200 ft and +2,200 ft [equivalent of Mission Peak in Fremont]. See trail map for detailed information - click here . We saw lots of oak, pines, turkey vultures, ladybugs, deer, mushrooms, moss & lichen, and various other wildlife. We met up at the Safeway in Morgan Hill and started hiking from the park headquarters at about 11:15am. We arrived at China Hole at about 1:15pm and stayed till 2:00pm, after which we started the long climb back. Although the return trip was actually 0.5 mile shorter (5.3 vs 5.8miles), it featured two sets of uphills that totaled 2,200 ft. Several stretches were extremely steep, exceeding perhaps 50% grade (~20-35 degrees). But everyone made it back (~5pm) without injury and aftewards went to Di Da vegetarian restaurant in San Jose (2597 Senter Rd). Enjoy the photos! Post or Read Comments. See

Photography notes: Photos were taken with Canon 10D, 24-70mm/2.8L, 100mm/2.8 macro, and 17-40mm/4.0L lenses; handheld and tripod, various ISOs (100-800), and 550EX flash [some of the ladybug photos]. Some photos were enhanced/modified with software so they look as our eyes would see. This is especially true for high contrast photos where part of the scene is in bright sunlight but another part is in the shadows. Click here for an example.
